  • A Banggai Cardinalfish, also known as Cardinal Banggai and Pterapogon Kauderni, is a mini-sized marine animal and bears similar features to a goldfish. They are really attractive to look at and are admired by all. ]
  • This beautiful fish species is known to belong to the Actinopterygii class of fish.
  • They are usually found in really large water bodies, like oceans or large seas. Though this is the genuine case, they can also easily survive in an aquarium or even a small water tank.
  • There is known to be a population of about 2.4 million of this fish. Despite its large population, it is considered to be an endangered species. This is because their home range of 5,500 sq km in the Banggai Islands of Indonesia is very small for all of them to fit properly.
  • If living in an ocean or sea, they can survive a period of only one to two years. But that is not the case in establishing its habitat in an aquarium. In the case of an aquarium or a small water tank, it can survive for a period of four to five years.
  • The Banggai Cardinalfish usually live in small groups of about seven or nine in the sea. This group is called a Banggai Cardinalfish school. This school of fish also includes the habitat of long-spined marine animals like coral reef fish and sea urchins.
  • In the wild, the Banggai Cardinalfish are usually found in the tropical waters of the Archipelago, in the Banggai Islands of Indonesia. They are known to feed on crustaceans, zooplankton and small, deep-sea fish species

Tips to keep in mind while breeding the Banggai Cardinalfish in your home
  • Never buy this fish species if the retailer says that it is wild-caught. You must only aim at buying aquacultured or captive-raised species. This will also allow the aquacultured fish to get adapted to life in an aquarium much more easily than the wild species of this fish.
  • If you have the suitable equipment and setups to breed this fish, you can buy three of them as a collective. Then you can observe whether at least 2 out of the 3 of them start to pair off. If the two of them start to pair up, you need to remove the third from the tank as both of them together will trouble it to death.
  • Remember to start by serving them frozen or even live fish food. Then slowly turn towards vitamin enriched flake foods.
  • Even though the fish may seem fine at first when you buy them, remember to keep them in a quarantine tank before placing them in the new tank.
  • Always watch out for the aggressive ones and try to keep them separately, as it can be hazardous for the non-aggressive ones.
  • It can also be tough to know about the differences between a male Banggai Cardinalfish and a female one unless they are ready to mate. During the breeding stage, you will notice that the male fish’s lower jaw will turn to be a little bit more rounded. This will not be the same in the case of a female’s jaw, which will be a little more ‘in line.’ Another fact that will show the difference between them is that male species will have longer second dorsal fins.
